GUIDELINES FOR EXPEDITION IN NEPAL

A. Before organising an expedition
1 . Please read the relevant Acts and Regulations thoroughly.
2. Collect other useful information as much as possible about Nepal.
3. Then plan your expedition.

B. Asking for a climbing permit
4. The following documents have to be sent to the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Mountaineering Division, Kathmandu, Nepal.

- Complete Application (Schedule-1 of Regulations)
- Endorsement of the National Alpine Club. (If there is no Alpine Club, endorsement of the Government)
- Short bio data of all members of the expedition (with photograph)
- Map and/or photograph of the mountain indicating climbing route.
- Approach route map.

5. Since climbing permission is granted on "first come first served" basis, it is necessary to enlist the expedition's name for the particular mountain for the particular season of the year. The listing is made when the completed application form with all documents are received by the Ministry of Tourism. In case all documents mentioned above cannot be submitted at a time ' booking is possible with only the completed application by the expedition leader.

6. No fee is required to enlist the expedition's name.
Therefore, please do not pay any amount before you receive the letter of permission from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation.

C. Trekking Agency
7. Appointment of any government recognised trekking agency of Nepal is essential as a local liaison medium to conduct the expedition in Kathmandu (Nepal) as per Mountaineering Expedition Regulation. Such appointments can be made prior to or after getting the climbing permission from the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation.

D. Payment of Climbing permit fee (Royalty)
8. The leader of the expedition team is required to pay compulsorily the full amount of climbing permit fee (Royalty) within TWO MONTHS of the date of getting the permission. In case of failure to make payment of royalty within two months, such permission may be cancelled.

9. The climbing permit fee (Royalty) must be paid directly to the Ministry of Tourism either by bank draft or bank transfer A/C No. 1-1-8-3 to Nepal Rastra Bank, Thapathali, Kathmandu (Nepal) payable in convertible foreign currency.

E. Preparation in Nepal for the Expedition

10. Import of foods and equipment
Invoices and airway bill or bill of loading (four copies each) have to be submitted to the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation for import licence and customs clearance for the import of expedition foods and equipment to Nepal. CIF Kathmandu value is to be clearly mentioned in the invoice.

11. Communication Equipment
As walkie-talkies, transceiver (wireless) sets and other communication equipment are controlled articles in Nepal, please declare these articles at the customs office (at entry point) that you wish to bring those items into Nepal for use during the climbing period.

Such equipment have to be collected from the customs office by obtaining a permission letter from the Ministry of Communication.

For the clearance of the equipment, a completed application form and invoice with catalog or specifications (four copies each) should be submitted to the Ministry of Tourism which are later to be sent to other government offices concerned.

F. Filming

12. Permission is required for filming. The Ministry of Communication must be contacted any time for queries about filming in Nepal.
